A New Era for Theatr Clwyd: A Celebration of Community, Creativity, and Culture

Theatr Clwyd has officially marked the phased reopening of its redeveloped home with a vibrant community celebration that perfectly captured the spirit of this iconic venue.

A Celebration Led by Community and Stars

Hollywood star Rhys Ifans, who began his acting journey in Theatr Clwyd’s youth theatre, returned to join hundreds of guests for the occasion. Alongside Ifans were notable figures including Welsh Government Culture Minister Jack Sargeant, Arts Council of Wales Chief Executive Dafydd Rhys, and representatives from Flintshire County Council, all united in celebrating this milestone.

This redevelopment, described as Wales’ most significant cultural project, represents an investment of £50 million, including £26.5 million from Welsh Government. The transformation includes upgraded theatres and cinema spaces, a stunning new terrace and restaurant led by Michelin-starred chef Bryn Williams, a cafĂ© and shop, and an indoor and outdoor play areas for children—ensuring the venue serves as a true community hub.

Culture Minister Jack Sargeant praised the investment:

“This investment will not only endow Wales with a world-class arts venue, it will also create sustainable employment and serve as a vital community hub for generations to come.”

The opening ceremony was more than a milestone—it was a statement of intent. Theatr Clwyd is not only a world-class venue for performance but a home for creativity, connection, and cultural pride.

The day featured a joyful performance from Theatr Clwyd’s community groups, led by much-loved panto dame Phylip Harries and supported by musicians from Theatr Clwyd Music. The event highlighted the theatre’s longstanding commitment to nurturing local talent and ensuring the arts remain accessible to all.

A £50 Million Transformation for Generations to Come

Beyond its cultural significance, the project promises a major economic impact, projected to boost the regional economy by over £20 million annually and create at least 100 permanent jobs, alongside sustainable employment and apprenticeship opportunities.

Liam Evans-Ford, Theatr Clwyd’s Executive Director: “This event offers a moment to celebrate the first phase of our opening, and to thank partners such as Welsh Government, Arts Council Wales and, of course, Flintshire County Council.”

In my next blog, I’ll dive deeper into two of the new commissions—Frances Priest’s tiled installation behind the bar and Manon Awst’s mirror artworks—and explore how these pieces not only reflect Theatr Clwyd’s principles but feel perfectly at home in their newly transformed spaces.
