Possible Funding for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai

I have applied for funding to possibly attend the 2025 Expo in Osaka.

What is a world expo?

A World Expo is an event that brings together people and innovations from around the world in an effort to address issues facing humankind on a global scale.

What are the themes for this Expo?

  • To contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • Japan’s national strategy Society 5.0

In 2025, the world will be five years away from 2030, the year the United Nations has set as the target for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Therefore, Expo 2025, will become a key platform for reaching the SDGs by 2030.

Society 5.0: Japan’s national strategy to develop a human-centered society that progresses economically and resolves social issues through a system that combines both cyber and physical spaces in a sophisticated manner. It refers to a new form of society chronologically following farming, industry, and information societies. A society that is able to resolve a variety of issues on a global scale with technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, big data, and biotechnology; a society that will have achieved the SDGs.

How will it help my research?

  • Building on Previous Experience – My attendance at Expo 2020 in Dubai provided valuable insights that directly informed my research. Attending Expo 2025 will allow me to expand upon this knowledge and apply new global perspectives to my work at Theatr Clwyd.
  • Access to Cutting-Edge Innovations – Expo 2025 will showcase the latest advancements in sustainability, community engagement, and well-being in public spaces. Engaging with these ideas -will allow me to incorporate global best practices into my research.
  • Networking & Collaboration – The Expo will bring together artists, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners from around the world. Attending will enable me to establish meaningful connections that could lead to future collaborations, funding opportunities, and the exchange of knowledge.
  • Relevance to My Research – As my work explores playfulness, joy, and engagement in public arts, Expo 2025’s themes will provide direct case studies, innovative approaches, and inspiration to enhance  research findings.
  • Real-World Applications – Theatr Clwyd is undergoing redevelopment, making this a crucial time to integrate fresh ideas into its public arts programme. Attending the Expo ensures that my research remains at the forefront of contemporary practice, benefiting both academic discourse and practical application.
  • Disseminate my research to an international audience
  • I also hope to immerse myself in the ceramic heritage of Japan and complete a course on Kintsugi whilst I am in Japan. The Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by joining pieces back together and filling cracks with lacquer dusted with powdered gold, silver, or platinum, thereby highlighting the flaws in the mended object. I would like to learn this technique to evolve my research into a sustainable practice by being able to create something new from the broken.
